Willis George Madden

January 7, 1935 — March 24, 2026

Bozeman

Willis George Madden, after 91 years in the Gallatin Valley, embarked on his final ride into the high country on March 24, 2026, passing away peacefully exactly as he lived—with the quiet strength and freedom of the mountains he loved.

Born on January 7, 1935, to Charles and Anna Madden, Willis came into a world of wide horizons and cold Montana winters, where the content of his character had been forged by two wives and seven children. For many years, this dedicated father was a member of the workforce at Montana State University, where his constant diligence and reliable spirit left a mark on the campus. After his time at the university, he spent several years in construction with calloused hands, knowing the weight of a heavy beam and the satisfaction of a structure rising true against the “Big Sky.” He was a loving grandfather with a brilliant mind and endless capabilities.

But his heart was never tethered to the valley floor. His soul belonged to the timberline and the high ridges of God’s church. Willis was a master of the hunt and a lover of horses; he knew the rhythmic creak of a leather saddle and understood the vicissitudes of the wilderness as he enjoyed his happiest hours following in the footsteps of wild creatures in the thin mountain air.

He lived by the code of the old West—hard work, quiet dignity, and a deep respect for the animal and the earth. He has kept his promises, he has traveled his miles, and now, he has earned his sleep.

Willis is now reunited with his parents, siblings, and his son Joseph Charles Madden, and though the saddle is empty here in the Valley, he is surely cresting a new ridge where the spring grass is green, and the mountains never end; the rider has gone home to lie down in green pastures.
