Steven “Steve” Richard Welsby was born May 24th, 1969, in Denver, CO to George and Margaret Welsby. Steve grew up in Boulder, CO, graduating from Fairview High School. After high school Steve went to ITT tech and earned an associate's degree in computer science. With his degree, Steve then went to work for IBM and then Par Microsystems where he met the love of his life, Tammy. The couple was Married in March of 1999 in Broomfield, CO. In 2000, the couple welcomed a daughter, Kourtney, to the family. In 2021, the family moved from Broomfield, CO to Billings, MT, where Tammy was from. Steve loved the smaller town feel of Montana. In 2002, the couple had a son, Logan, to complete their family. Steve went to work for Stillwater Mine as a system administrator. He often liked to say he was a data miner when referring to his job. In 2015, Steve got a job with Oracle as a Senior Systems Administrator and the family moved to Bozeman, MT.
At an early age, Steve always loved keys and locks. This fascination helped fuel Steve’s love for all things electronic. He was always trying to further his knowledge of computers, electronics and programing - trying to make things run better and more secure.
When not working on computers, Steve liked to spend time with his family fishing, camping and ATVing, especially at Tammy’s family property in the Big Belt Mountains. Steve enjoyed watching movies with his family, especially Star Wars and Marvel movies.
Steve battled health issues from an early age. In 2001, he had to get one of his kidneys removed and was diagnosed with diabetes. He had many underlying health issues over the years and struggled with his diabetes. In 2019, Steve’s remaining kidney failed and he had to start dialysis. He was put on the transplant list. This was a serious life changing development, but he tried to remain positive. On March 8, 2024, Steve received the miracle call from the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, MN that they had a kidney and pancreas for him. The transplant of both organs was successful, and after recovery Steve was doing well and was even able to travel to Colorado to see his family for Thanksgiving. In December he was not feeling well, by the end of the year he was hospitalized and then life flighted to the Mayo Clinic where it was determined he had histoplasmosis, black fungus, that had spread from his lungs to his blood stream, from which he was not able to recover.
Steve is survived by his wife, Tammy; daughter, Kourtney (Franklin) Richen and son Logan. He leaves behind both his parents, George and Margaret Welsby; brother, Scott (Lanel) Welsby; sister, Lisa (Larry) Dixon; and niece, Christina (Karl) Parsons along with her children Daniel, Hannah, Esther, and Elizabeth.
Steve had a huge fondness for cats especially orange tabby’s. His one request was to have his ashes put with those of Sawyer and Wild Thing, who was with the family for 17 years.
