Sheryl Anne Mooney

December 29, 1942 — February 13, 2017

To have known Sheryl Anne Mooney was to have had the pleasure of knowing someone who knew how to live. And those she touched are all the better for it. Anyone else, sorry out of luck because this Butte girl was one of a kind!

Sheryl was born in Butte, Montana on December 29, 1942 to parents Dan and Evelyn Mooney. Dan Mooney was co-owner of Cahill-Mooney Construction Company, which built many Butte landmarks.

Sheryl was a Bozeman resident for nearly 50 years but gave a lifetime of loyalty to her hometown. After graduation from Butte High in 1960, Sheryl attended Montana State College.

In 1964, Sheryl married Monte Eliason. Sheryl and Monte lived around the U.S., wherever Monte was stationed with the Navy. During that time she worked as a high school teacher, later returning to Bozeman to teach English and history at Bozeman High School.

Following her retirement, Sheryl pursued multiple passions, one of which included giving astrological readings, a skill she inherited from a grandmother and shared with clients around the world.

In 1992, Sheryl married Timothy Merica. In June 1993, she, Tim, and other families purchased the Quinta Ranch, outside of Three Forks, Montana, which they named the Madison River Inn and Conference Center.

Sheryl had a passion for learning, teaching, and searching out the truth in every discipline she embraced. She epitomized grace with a joyous presence. Her door and heart were open to all. Sheryl was a true friend. She was classy, intelligent, creative, generous, and adored by all who knew her.

We lost Sheryl on February 13th, 2017 in an accidental house fire. We take comfort in knowing that she is now soaring among the stars, the same stars that she so passionately read to guide her friends on earth.

A celebration of Sheryl’s life will be held on Sunday April 9th from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Story Mansion in Bozeman (811 S. Willson Ave.). The celebration will include food, one of Sheryl’s great pleasures in life. All are invited to bring memories, pictures, and a dish to share!
