In the early morning hours of May 18, 2023, Mom passed peacefully in her sleep. She was in the loving care of her family at her home in Bear Canyon. She was 89.
Nancy was born in Bozeman, MT, on April 1, 1934, to John Roscoe Wheat and Laura Lasater Wheat. In 1937, her mother married Earl Pierce and three more siblings were born; Tom, Annie and Chuck. In her youth Nancy spent time in Kentucky with her Wheat relatives and would later regale her family with humorous stories of the South.
Nancy attended Gallatin High School in Bozeman. On June 6, 1953, she married the love of her life, George R. Wood, and they made their home on the ranch in Bear Canyon. Together they had nine children. Nancy was a faithful member of Holy Rosary Parish. She was a devoted ranch wife and mother spending countless hours gardening, canning and sewing. Her last sewing project was an embroidered baby quilt for the newest member of her clan. In later years, Mom and Dad would take vacations to Oregon and the Southwest. In June of 2013 they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Sadly, George passed away just a few weeks later. Mom loved to go for drives to Yellowstone Park, Beartooth Pass and anywhere her kids would take her. She especially enjoyed all the holiday and birthday celebrations a large family brings.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; sons, Randy and Robby; sister, Annie; and a brother, Tom. Survivors include her brother, Chuck (Stacie) Pierce of Arlington, WA; sons, Faron, Kevin, and Chris, of Bozeman; daughters, Carmel and Carla, of Bozeman, Shari of Roundup/Bozeman, and Shauna (Phil) Carter of Pray; her beloved grandchildren, Troy (Beth Harper) Carter of Bozeman, Allison (J.D.) Nelson of Sidney, Virginia Wood of Missoula, Heather Carter of Salem, OR, Kiriana Wood of Bozeman, and Jasmin Brookhart of Bozeman; two adored great-grandchildren, Violet Nelson and Cole Carter; and lastly, Patches, her devoted cat.
At Nancy's request, a private family graveside service at Sunset Hills Cemetery has taken place. Memorials in Nancy’s honor are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.
