Edward L. Fonk was born on September 9, 1932, in Bozeman, Montana, to Hubert and Erlice (Skinner) Fonk. He was raised in Manhattan, Montana, where he graduated from Manhattan High School in 1952. Shortly after, Ed answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army and proudly becoming a paratrooper with the legendary 82nd Airborne Division.
While stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Ed married his high school sweetheart, Billie Lee Bates, on August 19, 1954. Together, they built a life rooted in love and resilience, raising four beloved children: Terry, Larry, Kathy, and Barry.
Ed began his career as a lineman with Mountain Bell, where he worked with dedication and grit until his retirement. In April 1973, Ed faced the heartbreaking loss of Billie Lee. As a single father of four, he met the challenge with quiet strength and unwavering devotion. Through those years, family remained his anchor. His legendary gravy recipe became a symbol of comfort and tradition, still cherished by bricklayers and kin alike.
On October 16, 2005, Ed found love again when he married Ramona Svaleson, who became his North Star and steadfast companion. Together, they shared years of adventure, laughter, and deep companionship. In his later years, Ramona lovingly cared for Ed, continuing the bond of devotion they had nurtured.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife Ramona; his children Terry, Larry, Kathy, and Barry; grandchildren Damion Fonk, Trevor Smith, Tevan Smith, Austin Fonk, Ryan Fonk, and Evan Fonk; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and grace. a life well-lived and deeply felt by all who knew him.
Services will be held at Dahl Funeral home on Friday October 17, 2025 at 11:00 . Grave side will follow at Meadow View cemetery in Manhattan. A luncheon will be hosted at the American Legion Club.
