Dr. Douglas Bishop, a beloved husband, father, educator, and global advocate for agricultural development, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, scholarship, and unwavering dedication to both agricultural education and his church community.
Born in Dodge City, Kansas, on September 24, 1933, Doug was the devoted husband of Lorraine for 70 cherished years. Together, they raised three sons—Kenneth, Steven, and Terry—who carry forward his values and love of the outdoors.
Doug began his teaching career in Wiley, Colorado, where he taught vocational agriculture for five years and served as high school principal during his final two years. His commitment to lifelong learning extended to adult education, a passion he continued during his tenure in Sterling, Colorado.
Pursuing his PhD at The Ohio State University, Doug contributed to the National Center for Vocational Education and helped introduce microfiche resources to Montana State University’s library. Over his 25 years at MSU, he served as Acting Department Head, Assistant Dean of the College of Agriculture, and was honored as Professor Emeritus. His influence reached far beyond the university, advising Peace Corps programs in Colombia, evaluating rural electrification in Egypt, mentoring doctoral students from the University of Alexandria, and traveling extensively to Kazakhstan, Croatia, and Ethiopia, making nine trips to support agricultural cooperatives and vocational curriculum reform.
Outside of academia, Doug found joy in the outdoors—hunting, fishing, and tending to his yard. He was a dedicated member of his church community, teaching Sunday school and volunteering wherever he was needed. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
Doug is survived by his wife, Lorraine; sons, Kenneth, Steven (Kathleen), and Terry; and one grandchild.
A memorial service in Doug’s honor will be held Friday, September 26, 2025, 2:00 p.m., at Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service, 300 Highland Blvd., Bozeman; interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery will follow the service.
