On March 5, 2026, the good Lord took Carl Wendell Trihub, Jr. to be by his side in eternity. He was 91 years old.
Carl was born on June 5, 1934, in Harvey, North Dakota. The only son among 7 sisters, Carl grew up on the family farm outside of Keif, North Dakota. Life was rough and the winters were harsh. Growing up in this environment created the strong work ethic that Carl embodied his whole life.
Carl served honorably in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. He was stationed in Germany and achieved expert marksmanship in rifle, pistol, and submachine gun.
After the army, Carl returned to North Dakota and entered the masonry trade, where he worked as a bricklayer until retirement in 1995. He was a truly skilled mason and earned a reputation for his hard work and reliability. Carl was a devoted member of the Bricklayers Union and widely considered among the best in the trade. He was most proud of his work on the Garrison Dam in North Dakota, the Federal Building in downtown Bozeman, many of the MSU campus buildings, and schools throughout the State.
Carl married Wanda Ranf on March 23, 1968 in Billings, Montana. After a foray in Hawai'i, the two settled in the Gallatin Valley in 1972. That year, Carl and Wanda also adopted his beloved sister Leila's three children—Joseph, Gregory and Christina—after she and her husband passed away. In 1975, the family moved to Gallatin Gateway into a brick ranch house that Carl, of course, helped build. The home was large enough for two sons, Jeffery and Dustin, to join the family. Carl and Wanda divorced in 1991.
For the next 25 years, Carl lived on a ranch where he applied the skills he learned from growing up on the farm and a lifetime of working with his hands. As the saying goes, you have to either be the guy or know the guy—and Carl was the guy. He could fix and find a use for almost anything. He loved to grow vegetables, which he learned to do in his mother's one-acre garden, and he knew every patch of wild asparagus from Bozeman to Minot.
Carl used what he knew to help others, always offering help or unsolicited advice. After his retirement, Carl worked for Eagle Mount where he became Facilities Manager. His devotion to his job, the horses, and the kids were a blessing to the organization. In his last years, he revitalized the gardens at the Cancer Support Community Montana, where he earned the title of Lead Volunteer Gardener.
Whether at the Bozeman or Belgrade Senior Center or down at Stacey's, Carl loved catching up on the local gossip and sharing stories. He was a good time and could cut a rug two-steppin' to his favorite country western music. Gift-giving was his love language, and you knew he held you in high regard when he bestowed his famous pickled asparagus or banana bread. He loved wildlife and wide-open spaces, riding horses, and feeding birds.
He is survived by his sisters Idell, Ellen and Jeanie, his children Joseph, Gregory, Christina, Jeffery and Dustin, and grandchildren Leila, Haley, Emma, Joshua, Jeffery Jr. and Clay, along with many beloved nieces and nephews. Carl will truly be missed.
A visitation will be held at 1 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM on Friday, March 13th, at Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Eagle Mount or the Cancer Support Community Montana.
