Winifred 'Winnie' Muriel Elson

Winifred “Winnie” Muriel Elson, 86, of Bozeman, passed away July 27, 2012. She was born March 16, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY to Jules and Betty (Borow) Sobie. She was raised in Brooklyn, and earned her undergraduate degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. In 1945 Winnie married Norman Elson in Philadelphia. Shortly after there marriage, Norman, who was serving in the army, was transferred to Baltimore, MD, while there she earned a Masters Degree from John Hopkins University. Winnie and Norman made their home in Rochester, NY, Norman worked as a medical doctor and Winnie was a Psychologist for the state mental hospital in Rochester until her retirement in 1994. She was a pioneer in care of schizophrenic patients and instrumental in the development of family therapy for her patients. Winnie and Norman retired to Sunny Isle, FL. (North Miami Beach) and Bozeman, MT. to be near children and grandchildren. She was active in the Democratic Party and League of Women Voters. Winnie enjoyed knitting, reading and spending time with their dog Natasha. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Mona Schonhaut. Survivors include her husband Norman of Bozeman; children Mark (Debbie Swartz) Elson of Tucson, AZ, Doug (Margret) Elson of Bozeman, MT and Wendy (Dave) Pierce of Bozeman, MT; six grandchildren Rachel and Alex Elson of Tucson, AZ, Kate and Emma Elson of Bozeman, MT, Sarah and Risa Pierce of Bozeman, MT and Natasha her golden retriever.
