Richard 'Gene' Gilbert

Richard#8220; Gene#8221; Gilbert, 73, of Bozeman, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009. He was born December 3, 1935 in Holdenville, OK to Myron and Martha (Cates) Gilbert. Gene married Ann Smith in Manassas, VA and throughout his life lived in Beltsville, MD, Phoenix, AZ, Prosser, WA and Bozeman, MT. Gene earned a PhD. in Plant Pathology and Soil Microbiology which he used during his 34 year career as a Research Scientist and Agrichem Specialist for the United States Department of Agriculture. Gene served in the US Army from 1954 through 1957. He was also a member of the Breakfast Optimist Club of Bozeman, Gallatin Gardeners Club, and a lifetime member of United States Tennis Association. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, his brother Robert of Portland, OR, his son Mark (Vickie) of Mesa, AZ, and his daughter Jill Matteson(Jeff) of Kalispell, MT. He also had six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial with reception to celebrate Gene#8217;s life is planned for Saturday, October 24 at 2:00pm at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Bozeman. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made in his name to The Boys and Girls Club of Bozeman, 600 Bridger Dr., Bozeman, MT 59715.
