Philipine “Phyl” Volk Schmidt of Bozeman died Wednesday, March 4, 2015, after a short illness with her family by her side. She lived in Bozeman since 1960, and lived in Billings briefly, where her husband Nick died in 1972. Phyl was born July 20, 1917 in Berwick, ND. She had to walk a mile and a half to school across the field in all kinds of weather. She spoke German and English. She was baptized, had her first holy communion, was confirmed, and married in “St. Anselms Catholic Church” in Fulda, ND. Nick and Phyl were married September 20, 1937 in Fulda, ND. The whole family owned and ran the Dairy Queen in Bozeman for many years. Phyl always had beautiful flowers that she meticulously cared for, inside and out. When they were blooming, fresh cut flowers were in vases to enjoy. She had many angels and wonderful works of art around the house. She changed the artwork with the seasons. She made a quilt for each grandchild, and cross-stitched and embroidered many things. She loved hugs and kisses and visits from family and friends any time. There was always something good to eat out on the counter or just a microwave away from the freezer. She was also a devoted member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and rarely missed Saturday night Mass. She is survived by her children: Ralph and Carol Schmidt (Rugby), Sylvia Heit and Robert (Arvada), Mary Ann Tucker (Colorado Springs), Ken and Marcia Schmidt (Belgrade), Joe and Becky Schmidt (Grand Forks), Patti Schmidt (Bozeman, Linda and Ken Heil (Bismarck), Shirley and Jerry Francisco (Bozeman), Margie and Ray Erickson (Bozeman), Dee Schmidt (Bozeman), Jerry and Joyce Schmidt (Bozeman), Donna Schmidt (Anchorage); Sisters: Dorothy Wilden, (MI), Regina Binfet (Rugby); 14 Grandchildren; 24 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great-Great Grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
