Peter Paul Chura

April 2, 1925 — August 8, 2014

Peter Paul Chura born in New York but followed his heart to Montana. He died peacefully in his sleep on August 8, 2014 at 89 years old. During WWII, he travelled the world as a Merchant Marine and U.S. Marine. While waiting for a train, Peter Chura, caught the eye of a beautiful woman looking at post cards. Not one to step away from a challenge, he followed her all the way to Montana. Peter married Cynthia Corcoran Chura on a beautiful October day in Forsyth, Montana. They were together 60 years. While living in Forsyth, Peter and Cynthia built, from the ground up, the town’s first Snack Bar. They served hamburgers, hot dogs and homemade root beer. Later, Peter and Cynthia turned the Snack Bar into an A & W Root Beer Stand. Though Peter and Cynthia moved away from Forsyth, he never lost his love for hot dogs, root beer and Montana. Peter worked for EG&G at both the Idaho and Nevada Nuclear Test sites. During this time in his life, he was raising three children, Terry, Jerry and Jeff Chura. The family spent many weekends camping in Yellowstone Park. In Las Vegas, Peter would spend time with the boys scouting out the dessert looking for forgotten treasures. Peter was always industrious. So when the Nevada Test Site closed in 1974, Peter shifted is career into the Gaming Industry of Las Vegas. Peter was a black jack dealer for Harrah’s Casino on the Las Vegas Strip for 27 years. Peter and Cynthia knew they wanted to return to Montana. So in 1993, together with the help of every member in their family, they built and opened Canyon Cabins Lodging in Gallatin Gateway, Montana. Though Peter and Cynthia moved into Bozeman in 2003, he never stopped planning on the next improvement for Canyon Cabins. When Cynthia was sick with PSP, Peter was her caregiver. When his children needed help, Peter provided for them. If given the chance to talk about his grandchildren, Peter had endless stories of their great achievements. He loved his family. Peter was preceded in death by his 11 brothers and sisters, parents, wife, Cynthia and son, Jeff. Survivors include son, Jerry (Elizabeth) Chura, Gallatin Gateway, daughter, Terry Lowey, Reno, NV, five grandchildren, Haley Chura, Hannah Chura, James Lowey, Collin Lowey and Karen (Lowey) Laman. The family is very grateful for the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, Gallatin Rest Home and Hospice for the care they provided for Peter. Specifically they would like to thank Kelly Seymour. Additional gratitude and thanks to Father Leo of Holy Rosary Parish. A funeral mass will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.dahlcares.com.
