Lillian Miller

August 27, 1925 — November 11, 2008

Lillian Miller, 83, of Bozeman passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2008 surrounded by her family. Born August 27, 1925 as the only child to Frank and Dorothy (Gaffga) Davis in Greenport, New York, she attended the one and only Greenport school from Kindergarten through High School. From there Lillian went on to graduate with honors from Lennox Hill Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. During nursing school she was a Lieutenant in the Air Force Cadet Corps. Her Nursing career included Directress of Nurses at St Peters Hospital in Brooklyn NY. Lillian was united in marriage to the late Dr. Howard M. Miller on October 12, 1947. Together they raised three children. Lillian worked as a nurse in Indiana and in NY to put her husband through medical school. She worked side by side with her husband#8217;s obstetrical practice for thirty years in Newburgh, NY. While working and raising her family Lillian found time to volunteer for the Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance Corps as an EMT and served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years. While vacationing during the early 60#8217;s, Lillian and Howard developed a love for Montana and the Yellowstone area; prompting them to move to Bozeman in 1986 to semi- retire. Following the birth of her only grandchild Alex, Lillian became active in the Bozeman community and schools. Volunteer activities included taking blood pressures at the Senior Center and assisted with the hearing and vision screening in the Bozeman public schools. Concerned with the safety of the neighborhood children, she became the first crossing guard and spearheaded the successful effort to institute traffic control at Emily Dickinson Elementary School. Her connection with Emily Dickinson Elementary school continued until her death. She was truly a beloved figure there. Her volunteerism was recognized and awarded for several times including Friend#8217;s and Neighbor Award in Woman#8217;s Day Magazine in June 2002. In her later years Lillian enjoyed taking cruises with family and friends to many destinations. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Howard. Survivors include her children, daughter Linda and husband Ken Collins of Beacon, NY, son Bruce Miller of San Diego, CA, and son Scott and wife Heidi Miller of Belgrade, MT; granddaughter, Alexandria (Alex) Miller of Bozeman; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, an open house to celebrate Lillian#8217;s life will be begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the home of Scott and Heidi Miller, 444 Coral Drive, Belgrade, MT. At Lillian#8217;s request a Scholarship Fund has been set up in Lillian#8217;s name to be awarded to a high school student who has attended Emily Dickenson Elementary School pursuing a career in nursing.
