Joyce Alice Redmond

May 15, 1928 — March 6, 2014

Joyce Alice Redmond, age 85, of Belgrade, Montana, passed away peacefully early in the morning of March 6, 2014. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Joyce was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, May 15, 1928 where she was raised, attended school, and worked as a secretary to the president of the Wausau Paper Company. She met the love of her life, Clarence Redmond, at a dance after he returned home from World War II. They were married February 18, 1950, in Wausau, Wisconsin where they lived and began to raise a family. In 1957 they moved their budding family west to Miles City, Montana, and the following year they continued westward to Bozeman. They finally settled in Belgrade in 1958 where they planted their roots for good. In 1977 they moved across the street and built the house she so dearly wanted and she set about planting a garden and flowers. They remained in this house the rest of their lives. The house, family, and friends were her focus and a source of pride. The house remains a sanctuary for the boys who scattered around the country. Joyce was active for years in the Foresters with the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She worked as the head librarian in Belgrade for many years. She also worked for the Gallatin Country Elections, spending many a late night collecting ballots and bringing them into Bozeman, no matter the weather, for as long as her health would allow. As a mother of five sons, Joyce was active in the Belgrade Public Schools, helping out in the classrooms whenever she was needed. She was a lifelong advocate for academics and high standards in the schools. She also enforced this with her boys. She loved gardening and tending her flower beds, Sunday picnics, being dragged along on many outdoor hikes, spending time with friends and working on various crafts. She was an avid reader and an excellent seamstress and baker, often supplying her friends and family with delicious treats. She was particularly proud of her husband, five children, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Clarence Redmond after 58 years of marriage, her parents Clarence and Edna Sagstetter, brother Donald Sagstetter, and her beloved sister Dolores. She is survived by her sons Kelly Redmond, of Reno, Nevada, Scott Redmond, of Belgrade, Montana, Cary (and Cindy) Redmond, of Beaverton, Oregon, Patrick (and Michele) Redmond, of Belgrade, Montana, and Michael Redmond, of Beaverton, Oregon; her grandchildren Samantha and Devin Redmond of Beaverton, Oregon and Mackenzie Redmond, of Belgrade, Montana. She is also survived by sister-in-law Shirley Sagstetter of Weston, Wisconsin, and brother Roger Sagstetter of Wausau, Wisconsin; and a niece Lisa Degen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Springmeadows and Bozeman Hospice for their loving care over the last year. To show their appreciation the family would prefer memorial donations may be made in Joyce’s name to Bozeman Hospice Care or Emeritus at Springmeadows, Bozeman.
