Frank "Dick" Richard Kountz

September 21, 1944 — September 3, 2017

Dick Kountz was born in Butte, MT, September 21st 1944 to Frank and Thelma Kountz. He grew up in Whitehall and graduated from Whitehall High where he was recognized for his many athletic accomplishments.

A rancher his entire life, Dick was also an accomplished entrepreneur and renowned outdoorsman.

His first business endeavor was Kountz Excavation, a successful construction company he started, developed and grew in Big Sky servicing that community and area many years.

In 1970 he embarked on a new construction venture that would become Kountz Mobile Park a “ways out of town” on Huffine Lane.

Shortly after the mobile park was up and running, Dick started Kountz Sanitation and grew this local waste removal service – serving the Bozeman area 50 years – until he retired.

Big Sky Outfitters guide trips – another ambitious enterprise Dick started – allowed him to be involved with the hobbies and activities he loved most; hunting, fishing, hiking… a true appreciation of the beauty and wonder that was his back yard. Add snowmobile racing to the long list of “relaxing” recreational past times, he would be the first to say his life was a full one.

After retiring, Dick and Kristie – wife, friend and cherished partner of 53 years – bought a home in Arizona where they spent the winters fishing and spending unlimited time with beloved dogs; Baby Girl, Tiny, Angel, Sassy.

Frank Richard (Dick) Kountz is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Thelma, his Aunt Ruth Kountz Haberger, and sister, Barbara Ann Kountz.

He is survived by his wife Kristie Kountz; children Robbie Kountz of Bozeman, Kimberly Kountz (Michael Ramsey) of Bozeman, Shane Kountz (Ann Martin) of Bozeman; brother Dayle Kountz; uncle John Haberger; grandkids Zachary (Megan) VanAusdol, Brooke VanAusdol, Frankie Kountz and Annie Kountz.

Dick is best known for being loud, rough and gruff, yet nothing but a teddy bear to those whom got to know him. A Celebration of Dick’s Life will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 27th at Dahl Funeral & Cremation Service Tribute Center.
