Donald Gillam

November 5, 1916 — January 21, 2012

Donald Smith Gillam, 95, passed away on January 21, 2012 at his home in Bozeman. He was born November 5, 1916 in Brandon, Iowa to Claude and Clara (Johnson) Gillam. Don was raised on a small farm outside Brandon; rode his horse to school; studied by kerosene lamps and often boasted that he graduated in the Top Ten of his classof nine! He went on to attend Iowa State University where he majored in Journalism and played varsity Baseball. As a pitcher he became known as 'Speed' Gillam for his fast-ball. Don was the consummate cattleman. He not only enjoyed every part of the cattle business, he had extensive experience in every aspect of it. He certainly understood and appreciated hard work but he also maintained a deep appreciation for a few of the 'as Don put it' more important activities in life such as duck hunting, fishing, world history and train travel. Don was truly grateful to be alive in this place and during these times. He felt it was the best time to be alive. He cherished his family, many great friends and felt fortunate to have partnered with so many great business partners. Don was preceded in death by his parents Claude and Clara; wives Lucille and Elaine; sisters Jeanette and June and brother's Martin and Claude. Don is survived by his wife Helene; son, Con (Daphne) Gillam of Bozeman; daughters, Linda (Kai) Kaholokai of Hawaii and Tina (Patrick) Lancione of New Mexico; grandchildren, Claire Gillam of Bozeman, Tony Lancione of New Mexico and Maile Kaholokai of Hawaii. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 27, 2012 from 6-8pm at Dahl Funeral Chapel. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Dahl Funeral Chapel followed by interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery. The family would like to thank Hospice of Southwest Montana and Cottonwood Case Management for their gentle care. Memorials can be made in Don's name to; the Bozeman Senior Center, 807 N. Tracy, Bozeman, MT 59715; Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter, 1549 E. Cameron Bridge Rd., Bozeman, MT 59714; or the Bozeman Public Library, 626 E. Main St., Bozeman, MT 59715.
