Ann Mchugh

October 10, 1910 — January 5, 2009

Ann Mc Hugh, whose life spanned almost a century, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2009 in Bozeman, Montana. Born Anselma Sonnhalter in Massillon, Ohio on October 10, 1910, she was the youngest of five children of Catherine and Henry Sonnhalter, a local merchant. She graduated from Mount Marie Academy in Canton, Ohio, and earned her teaching certificate at Kent State University. She subsequently taught in the Massillon and Cleveland public school systems. She married Edward P. McHugh on Aug 15, 1936 in St. Mary#8217;s Church in Massillon and raised three children in Cleveland Heights Ohio. These were some of her happiest years as she enjoyed fully her role as wife and mother. Following the sudden death of her husband in 1955, Ann returned to college at Case Western Reserve University, finished her degree and resumed her teaching career to support her family. She became an exceptional fifth grade teacher, adored by her students, and recognized locally and nationally for her excellence as a curriculum developer and an educator. In 1985, Ann moved to Bozeman to be near her family. With her characteristic enthusiasm, Ann started her new life as a Westerner. She loved the grandeur of the mountains, the warmth of the people and the activities of her grandson Chris. She never missed a school program. In service to her community, she worked on the Governor#8217;s Council on Aging and was active at the Senior Center. A valued member of Holy Rosary Parish, she served on the Parish Council, taught in the Religious Education Program and was a member of the Forresters. Her life long example of faith, love, patience, and good humor has been an inspiration to many. Her family and her church were the center of her life. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her children, Ed (Lois) McHugh of Massillon, Ohio; Mary Bartlo (Bob Cook) of Bozeman, Montana; Kathleen (Jim) Patton of New Orleans, Louisiana; her grandchildren: Lynn (Paul) Scanlon of Denver, Colorado; LT. Kevin McHugh U.S.N. of San Diego, California; Laura McHugh of Arlington, Virginia; Chris (Joanna) Bartlo of Portland, Oregon; Kate Patton of Seattle, Washington; Will Patton of Bellingham, Washington; and her great grandson, Sean Scanlon. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009, at 11 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. The family would like to extend particular thanks to the staff of the Mountain View Care Center in Bozeman for the devoted attention they gave to Ann during her stay.
