Alice Botterud

April 9, 1916 — May 11, 2009

Alice Dorothy Trunk Botterud, 93, of Bozeman passed away on May 11, 2009. Alice was born April 9, 1916 in Forsyth, MT, the daughter to Frank J. and Oona Fay (Gasaway) Trunk. Her family moved to Missoula when she was in 7th grade. She attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Missoula. During her junior year in High School, her family moved to Bozeman, MT. Alice graduated from Gallatin County High School. She then attended Montana State College for a year before going to Columbus Nursing School in Great Falls for two years. Alice then went to work for Consolidated Freight, working in Miles City, Bozeman, Glendive and Livingston. When in Livingston she met Keith Botterud. They were united in marriage on St. Patrick#8217;s Day in 1942 in Washington, D.C., at the time of Keith#8217;s enlistment into the US Navy. They lived in DC for many years while Keith finished his education at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. Following WWI, the State Department sent Keith, Alice and their new baby, Karen, to Holland for two years. They returned to Virginia for several years and were then sent to Norway for four years, where their second daughter, Anne, was born. With the State Department, they also lived in Honduras for two years, spent four years in Iran and four years in Pakistan before returning to the States for a couple of years and in 1972 back to Montana and settling in Bozeman. Alice lived an adventurous life as a diplomat#8217;s wife; she always felt her most productive years were in Iran, where she rubbed elbows with some of the wealthiest and poorest people in the world. Her greatest satisfaction came from working in the health care clinics that served the poverty-stricken in Iran. While in Bozeman, Alice was very active in Resurrection Parish, her book clubs, and bridge clubs. She also enjoyed traveling to the West Coast for salmon fishing. Alice was preceded in death by her husband Keith, her brother Frank J. Trunk Jr., and younger sister Betty Ann Todd. Survivors include her two daughters, Karen Botterud of Chicago, IL and Anne Botterud of Denver, CO; step-daughter Diane Lovett of Cottonwood, AZ, sister Margaret Waltari of Missoula, MT, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Alice will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Resurrection Catholic Parish. Memorials may be made in her name to Resurrection Parish, 1725 S. 11th Ave., Bozeman, MT.
