Murray Gale Thompson

Murray Gale Thompson left this world on June 13th, 2017. He was born May 2, 1930 to Robert L. and Mary J. Thompson in Chester, Montana. He married Mary F. Winter on October 5, 1956 in Billings, Montana. Murray grew up in the Sweet Grass Hills of Montana where he attended a one room school house in Whitlash for first through eighth grade before attending high school in Chester.

Murray served as a Yeoman in the United States Navy for four years in Hawaii during the Korean War. He later attended Havre Junior College, and then enrolled in business school in Billings. After college, he worked as a sales representative in the oil fields in Williston, North Dakota.

In 1962, Murray and Mary moved to Three Forks, Montana where he worked for the Ideal Cement Company and at the same time, helped on his parents' ranch in Willow Creek, Montana. In 1967 Murray started a 24 year career as an administrator with Gallatin County. He retired in 1991.

During his time with Gallatin County, he moved to Bozeman where he and his family have lived for over thirty years.

Murray was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge #6, and an active member of the Algerian Shrine Organization. He loved bowling and competed in two senior national level events in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Murray is preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters Donna Brown and Dorothy Bianchi. He is survived by his wife Mary of sixty one years, Brother Earl Thompson and wife Sunny of Lewistown, Montana, and his three children, Linda (Bob) Tremelling of Tucson Arizona, Charles Thompson of Bozeman, and Ward Thompson of New York.

A graveside service for Murray will be held Saturday, 1:00pm at Sunset Hills Cemetery, followed by an informal memorial service at The River Church (in the Elk's Building) at 1:45pm.
