Devon Craig White

April 21, 1950 — September 4, 2017

Devon White was born April 21, 1950 in Bangor, Main to Alden and Ada (Staples) White. He grew up in Frankfort, Maine and raised hell with his three brothers on their grandfather’s farm. He graduated from Hampden Academy in 1968. Devon played basketball, football, and baseball and lettered in all three sports. He was a member of the National Honors Society and was drafted into the U.S. Army following his graduation.

Devon was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska for two years as a combat engineer. He worked on the construction of Disney World in Florida after his military service, and decided to move to the Bozeman, Montana area in 1972. He worked in logging and construction in Big Sky, long before Big Sky was know as a destination location to the rest of the world. He held the title of the longest living resident in Big Sky until his death on September 4, 2017.

Devon was clearly loved by all, and known for his caring and generous spirit. He was a father figure to many, and especially loved spending time with Griffin, Trevor, and Quinn House, and his special girls: Lily Lawless and Hannah Breen.

His favorite hobbies included bird hunting with his Irish Setter Maggie, and Golden Retrievers Daly, Abby, and Spring, fishing, the blues, dancing, golf, and softball. Since 1988, Devon owned and operated the Corral Bar & Steakhouse with business partner David House. Devon loved to cook and his family and friends thought he was pretty good at it too.

Devon also won the Dirtbag King as the skier who managed to ski and party the most throughout the winter. He was famous for his 4th of July lobster parties, as well as similar get togethers to celebrate the birthdays of close friends.

Devon is predeceased by his mother, father, and beloved dogs Maggie and Daly. He is survived by his brothers Derek and his wife Kathy of Winterport, Maine, Derwin White and his wife Babette of Jefferson, Maine, and Drexell White and his partner Gayle Koyanagi of Northport, Maine, and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a great-great nephew, dear friend and office manager Karyn Lawless, and many other beloved friends and dancing partners who will never forget him—he’ll be saving dance just for you.

Devon was fun-loving, enthusiastic, and passionate in living, loving, and everything he did. He leaves behind an entire community of loving friends and family.

The family would like to thank all of Devon’s Montana family who have provided so much morale and support. Also, Dr. Kari Sue Ritter, a longtime friend, who gave loving and compassionate support with her expertise, and Debra Butz of Hospice Bozeman for her care and kindness to Devon. A Celebration of Life will be held at Bucks T-4 in Big Sky from 2-6 on Sunday, September 10, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Devon’s name to Eagle Mount, Big Brother Big Sisters, or American Legion Post #99.
